Milos Brocic

PhD , Sociology

I am a sociologist studying the moral dimensions of political conflict in liberal democracies. My research spans political sociology, culture, and sociological theory. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Sociology at McGill University.

My work examines the micro-foundations of political polarization by analyzing the formation of worldviews that underlie it. I focus in particular on developmental processes during the transition from late adolescence into early adulthood. One line of work studies moral socialization in higher education and its role in structuring contemporary “culture war” conflict. Another explores how experiences of alienation shape pathways into both radical and reactionary social movements. In ongoing work, I examine how the narratives citizens use to make sense of political conflict can themselves animate it.

Across these projects, I re-evaluate classic sociological problems using contemporary methods of data analysis, and engage timely issues with a perspective that is both old and new. This approach reflects a broader interest in the intellectual development of sociology, culminating in my work on the evolving legacy of Georg Simmel. My work has been published in venues such as the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Annual Review of Sociology, PLOS One, EPJ Data Science, and others.
