Milos Brocic

PhD , Sociology

I am a sociologist studying moral dimensions of political conflict in post-industrial societies. My research interests are primarily in the fields of political sociology, culture, and sociological theory. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Sociology at McGill University.

My dissertation, Moral Conflict and Socialization, examines the formation of moral orientations priming individuals for conflict and change. This includes assessing 1) how higher education reproduces moral divisions behind ‘culture war’ conflict, 2) the role of alienation in pathways to radical and reactionary movements, and 3) socialization of expressive individualism. One article from this work has been published in the American Sociological Review, while a second is forthcoming at the American Journal of Sociology.

In this work and elsewhere, I re-evaluate classic sociological topics with modern techniques of data analysis, engaging timely issues with a perspective both old and new. This builds on a general interest in charting sociology’s intellectual movements, which comes to a head in my work documenting the evolving legacy of Georg Simmel. My research here has been published in the Annual Review of SociologyThe Germanic Review: Literature, Culture, Theory, and Routledge International Handbooks.
